treatment of absence seizures

An absence seizure is a disease which is mostly seen among the children. An absence seizure is a type of neurological disorder which is marked by sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance. Someone suffering from absence seizures seemed to be blanked out or stares continuously to any place or thing. Absence seizures can exist with other types of seizures like shaking, muscle jerking and twitching. There is not any specific cause of this disease but according to physicians and surgeons, this disease is generally caused by the abnormal and unusual activities of the brain. Though this disease does not have any major problem but needs to be treated as soon as you identify the sign and symptoms of this disease.

Most common symptoms of absence seizures is continuous stare to any object or place. Apart from this, there are several other symptoms of this disease which are described below-

  • A person having absence seizure can often be seen having a symptom of lip-smacking. Lip smacking usually means making chewing motion via lips.
  • People suddenly stop moving and stop all their activities.
  • People suffering from absence seizures possess a symptom of fluttering eyelids. In this symptom, people generally flip their eyelids very quickly.
  • Absence seizures can also be identified by several other small activities like the movement of hands, rubbing of the finger, memory problem, etc.

Absence seizures are usually caused by the abnormal and unusual electrical activities of the brain. These activities usually include the process of transfer of impulse from nerve (neurons) to the brain. Due to this, several consciousness problems may arise like starring, blank out, jerking, etc.  Unusual or abnormal electrical activities of the brain do not cause any physical convulsion.

Most people do not have any other type of seizures if they are suffering from absence seizures. Family history of epilepsy is also one of the main causes of absence seizures. According to doctors, absence seizures generally have a genetic component in them. During an absence seizure, triggers may occur gradually. Triggers usually occur because of fatigue, fever, illness, stress and anxiety.

Absence seizures are mostly seen among the children aged between 4 to 8 years but sometimes it can be seen in early adolescence. If you are going through the symptoms of absence seizures (as mentioned above) then you must visit a doctor where you will be diagnosed. Diagnosis of absence seizures includes several tests like EEG, MRI, blood test, kidney and liver test, etc.

One of the most common and important tests for the diagnosis of absence seizures is the electroencephalogram or EEG test. EEG test usually records and track electrical activities of the brain through wave pattern. EEG test usually works on the principle of hyperventilation thus you may ask to breathe rapidly during this test.

Absence seizures can affect your work and efficiency quite heavily thus treatment of this disease is a must. There are numerous ways of treating absence seizures like anticonvulsion medication, changing lifestyle, Healthy diet, sufficient sleep, etc.

Anticonvulsion medication usually involves consuming medicines in order to avoid seizures, jerks, and triggers. Some of the common anticonvulsion medicines are lamotrigine, ethosuximide, and vaproid acid. These medicines should be consumed as per the direction of the physician or doctor in order to prevent seizures and triggers.

Apart from medication, transformation in lifestyle may also help in the treatment of absence seizures. There are some activities like consuming alcohol, smoking, improper diet, sleep deprivation, etc. should be ignored and avoided as these activities are responsible for triggers.

When to see a doctor?

Absence seizures disease generally occurs among the children aged between 4 to 8 years. Sometimes this disease may also be seen in children acquiring early adolescence. People should immediately visit a doctor when they find any sign or symptom of absence seizures. During the initial stage of absence seizures, you may often experience some symptoms like starring, fatigue, anxiety and triggers. Absence seizures are not too threatening but should be diagnosed and treated in its initial stage.

Many people suffering from absence seizures are not quite serious about this disease. Absence seizures do not tend to affect people physically but these seizures and triggers can occur suddenly while doing daily life activities like driving, walking, running, etc. and may cause serious injury. Thus people should consult a doctor during the initial stage of this disease.
